During the year 2023 (January-June), the LIFE Connect Ricot\u00ed project (LIFE20 NAT\/ES\/000133) carried out a capture and marking operation of Dupont’s lark specimens (Chersophilus duponti) in various areas of Guadalajara (Spain); specifically in the Parameras de Maranch\u00f3n, Hoz del Mesa y Aragoncillo, and Lagunas y parameras del Se\u00f1or\u00edo de Molina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The capture and marking work undertaken within the framework of this project aims to evaluate basic biological parameters, such as weight, skeletal size, or degree of parasitization of the specimens, and to obtain samples for genetic and dietary analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These captures also allowed for the marking of individuals with transmitters for radiofrequency tracking, delving into aspects of habitat fidelity, reproductive movements, population structure, or dispersal capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No specimen was harmed during capture, and all handling was carried out by specialized personnel, with the appropriate training and permits, strictly adhering to regulations and recommendations for bird capture and handling, minimizing any stress experienced by the individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once marking and the collection of biometric and genetic samples were completed, the animals were released at the same capture point or at the previously selected translocation site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the year 2023, 32 specimens were ringed, of which 14 were adult individuals (12 males and 2 females), 14 juveniles that could not yet be sexed, and 4 nestlings. The results in adults show a clear bias towards males due to the capture method, a bias that has been attempted to be corrected by searching for nests with thermal imaging cameras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The success in capturing young individuals, who had not finished molting yet, is due to the capture method with thermal imaging cameras, which allowed us to carry out very interesting random ringings aimed at deepening our understanding of the dispersal capacity of this species, for which there is still limited data available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, one of the few captures of juveniles made during the previous LIFE Ricot\u00ed project turned out to be a female, which was later recaptured 1 kilometer away breeding and with a nest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore, these markings can be crucial to answering questions such as dispersal capacity, species productivity, or territory replacement rate during the breeding season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the first months of 2024, the research team of the LIFE Connect Ricot\u00ed project will continue capture operations in the northern areas of Guadalajara to continue with the translocation of individuals and promote the improvement of less flourishing and\/or extinct populations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
