Distribution

The distribution area includes the Iberian Peninsula, the Maghreb (Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia) and the coastal strip of Libya and Egypt. In Spain the distribution is fragmented, the main nucleus being found in inland regions. It is composed of scattered populations in areas generally of small size, which have been grouped into five major natural regions: Iberian System, Ebro Valley, Northern Plateau, Southern Plateau and the southeastern peninsular.

In Morocco, the species occupies three regions: the Rekkam plateau; the High Molouya, between Midelt and Missour; and the high plateaus of Aïn-Béni-Mathar, bordering Algeria. In Tunisia, its distribution seems to have been relegated to small areas of esparto grassland in the Feriana region. There is no recent information on populations in Algeria, Libya and Egypt.
