The LIFE Connect Ricotí project is improving steppe habitats for the Dupont’s lark and other bird species. These ecosystems face environmental challenges due to the abandonment of traditional practices and changes in land use.

Thanks to agreements with local authorities, selective clearing of trees and shrubs, sowing and planting of steppe plant species, and topographic restoration have been carried out across more than 600 hectares of steppe areas protected by European legislation.

The proliferation of trees in these ecosystems is a result of the abandonment of traditional practices such as firewood collection, controlled burns, and extensive livestock grazing. These actions are crucial to restoring ecological balance.

During 2023 and 2024, we have worked on restoring steppe habitats in Segovia (200 ha), Guadalajara (80 ha), Cuenca (55 ha), and Lleida (280 ha). These interventions will be assessed through monitoring of vegetation, arthropods, and birds. The combination of science and traditional activities is key to preserving these valuable habitats. Let’s keep working together for biodiversity!
